Helloooooooooo!! Traveling is one of my all-time favorite things and it’s become such an engrained part of my business, too. It’s been so fun to be able to work with clients across the country & world, and you guys had a few questions about the process!
In this blog post I’m sharing some tips and answers to questions that you submitted via Instagram – enjoy!!
Where do you find places to photograph when you travel?
I love to search through Instagram geotags, get recommendations from locals, or my tried and true strategy – literally designate a couple hours to simply drive around and see what we find.
Fun fact, that’s how we found this wall (just driving around):
What products do you love traveling with?
Okay okay, I love this question so much!! It’s taken me years to build up my traveling essentials, and they are such a game-changer.
- My LuLuLemon Leggins with pockets (my absolute fave)
- These adidas sneakers I got from TJMaxx
- My go-to Dream Bigger baseball cap (oh hey, merch)
- This camera backpack is amazing for storing all my equipment safely
- My Soundproof Bose Headphones
- My notebook, pen, and the book I’m currently reading
How do you balance work + travel time?
Ooooh what a great question!! This summer we road tripped from Michigan to Colorado and I tried to work from the road…it did not go well. I’ve altered the way I approach work with travel since!
For instance, I’m writing this blog post a few days before we leave for the airport and scheduling it to go live the day of our flight. Timely & prepped ahead of time – yes, please.
I’m doing the same thing with my social media: batching captions, stories, & reels content to be ready to share when I want to (without spending two hours creating cute slides).
And I do my best to complete any outstanding client work before leaving as well (editing galleries, finalizing details for upcoming sessions, etc.)
Moral of the story: do as much as you can before you leave so that you can truly enjoy your trip! If you have some time to work and you want to then by all means go for it. But that way you won’t be stressed about busting out x, y, and z on the plane, uber ride, and airbnb bed until 9:30 at night.
Tips for traveling with camera gear?
I always let airport security know that my camera backpack is a camera bag so that they don’t accidentally flip it upside down; thankfully I’ve never had any issues!
Getting a sturdy backpack or case for your equipment makes a huge difference, definitely want it to be protected!!
Any tips for staying healthy while traveling?
Hydrate, hydrate, hydrate! That’s the first thing to go out the window for me so I’ve learned to carry a refillable water bottle with me through the airports & get a case of water wherever I land (especially if it’s somewhere with high altitude).
It’s easy for me to want to order a bunch of takeout while I travel so I’ve started meal planning before (making a grocery list) and stopping at the grocery store first thing after we land. Usually it’s simple things like eggs, bagels, sandwiches, or even microwaveable meals…and usually iced coffee in case where we’re staying doesn’t have coffee (gotta do what ya gotta do).
I’ll also take Zinc or some vitamins with me to have an immune boost while traveling, too!
What are some of your favorite traveling tips?!
